Mariarosa Dalla Costa — Fishermen and women for food sovereignty

The international fishworkers’ movement started during the 1970s in Kerala, a state in southwestern India. The Kerala Independent Fishworkers’ Federation, probably the largest trade union with no party affiliations in the region, was officially set up in 1979. Since 1957 the state of Kerala had been governed by a left wing coalition led by a left wing party that implemented development alongside a good welfare system. Both the poverty and the illiteracy that afflicted many Indian regions had been eradicated there. The population was 100% literate and this legacy was so strong that it influenced the non-left wing government that followed at the beginning of the new millennium. What brought the fishworkers to organize themselves?
